How to Tell If Your Shoes Can Be Repaired (Before You Throw Them Away)

Every week, we hear the same thing in our shop:
“I was about to throw these away… I didn’t think they could be fixed.”
The truth is — most quality shoes can be repaired, often for a fraction of the cost of replacing them. The key is knowing what kind of damage is repairable and when to act. Catching problems early is key - here's when you should resole your shoes.
Here’s how to tell if your shoes are worth saving.
1. Worn Heels? Yes — Absolutely Repairable
If your heel is worn down, slanted, or uneven, your shoes are still in excellent repair shape.
Heel lifts are designed to wear out and be replaced. If you wait too long, the heel block itself can become damaged — which makes repairs more expensive.
Early repair = cheaper repair.
2. Smooth or Slippery Soles
Leather soles that have become slick or thin can be:
Replaced
Rebuilt
Covered with protective rubber soles
This dramatically extends the life of the shoe.
3. Sole Separation
If the sole is coming loose at the front or sides — do not panic. This is a common repair and very fixable.
What matters is whether the leather uppers are still in good shape (which they usually are).
4. Cracked Leather: Depends on Severity
Light surface cracking can often be treated and strengthened. Deep structural cracking means the leather fibers have broken — and repair may not be cost-effective.
If your uppers are still soft and flexible, your shoes are usually worth saving.
5. Broken Zippers, Straps, and Buckles
These are simple repairs that often cost far less than replacing the shoe.
6. When Shoes Are Usually NOT Worth Repairing
When the interior lining has fully collapsed
When the leather is brittle and splitting deeply
When the shoe was originally cheaply made with glued cardboard components
Cheap construction limits repair — not the damage itself.
The Golden Rule
If the uppers are in decent shape, your shoes are usually worth repairing.
And if you’re not sure — just bring them in.
